Installation, 10 uprooted chairs
500 x 80 x 300 cm
In the wake of worldwide covid-regulations and clubs/ cultural institutions shutting down, I came across 12 chairs, which stood at least 1.50 m apart in small isolated clusters in the area between the Gemäldegalerie, Staatsbibliothek, Neue Nationalgalerie, and Philharmonie.
They were on the brink of being uprooted from their former installation site to make room for the Museum of the 20th Century, which is currently being built in this amalgamation of cultural figureheads.
As the transformation started to take place and the chairs were weeded out and flung down on a pile, I thought of this as the actual image of absence: seating objects of past claims.
Before the show at gr_und, they have been carefully preserved in the treasure house/museum depot of the “Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz” next to many colonial artifacts from stolen escapades.
